There is a reason that mystics and shaman used these compounds with extreme caution. They only made these compounds available to people who had gone through a number of initiations and rituals was all for very good reasons. The fact that PSYCH says that psychedelics will be worth more than $750000 bucks by next year is a really troubling prediction. This will attract all the wrong people. What could possibly go wrong?

Regarding psilocybin mushrooms and "bad trips":

When used properly, LSD is a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better psychedelic than psilocybin mushrooms. LSD contains only ONE substance, LSD, a dose of which is measured in millionths of a gram. Psilocybin mushrooms contain MANY substances other than psilocybin, a dose of which is measured in thousandths of a gram. (A THOUSANDTH OF A GRAM WEIGHS A THOUSAND TIMES MORE THAN A MILLIONTH OF A GRAM.) When someone takes psilocybin mushrooms they are, by comparison to LSD, taking a quite MASSIVELY larger dose of a mix of various substances.

LSD changed the world far, far more in just a few years than psilocybin mushrooms did in thousands of years!

Thank you for mentioning the idea that the “adverse effects” of ayahuasca are considered by some to be an intrinsic part of the larger integration experience. I understand that, now that psychedelics are undergoing scrutiny by the western scientific method, there isn’t always an existing framework by which to evaluate what constitutes an integral part of the experience, vs an adverse effect. But this is why we should be wary of this whole class of medicines being treated like just another compound to be synthesized into a pill and distributed en masse. I’m all for greater social acceptance of the efficacy of these experiences in treating the ailments of the modern world, but I believe something essential will be lost if we commodify and sanitize the experience to eliminate physical or mental discomfort.

If we must categorize certain effects as “adverse,” let’s approach it as the keepers of these medicines have for generations: these experiences are not for everyone. Some people will not be able to physically or mentally endure the experience, and this class of medicines won’t work for certain populations (ie: those with heart conditions or schizo-affective neurotypes)
